User Selection

Use User Selection to dynamically change how the different reports in a document are filtered.

By default, the tool is embedded in the filter area of a new report and filtered by <Previous Criteria>. This means that the report will be filtered by whatever filter criteria have been applied to the document. In a segment document this is simple as the report will display the configured segment by default (although this can be changed by breaking the filter link).

On a dashboard, reports can be configured to filter in a number of ways; by dashboard level filters, by their own individual filters, or by the results of other reports in the dashboard. Each of these is called a Selection Source. Where there are multiple Selection Sources, for example on a dashboard, then the tool will be rendered as a drop-down list that allows the user to select the source that is required.

For example, if you had two reports on your dashboard, a Venn diagram and a Crosstab Grid, you could configure filters so that clicking on a section in the Venn diagram would provide the filter for the crosstab grid. Each time you clicked on a different section, the crosstab grid would recalculate.

Breaking the Filter Link

If you wanted to include a report in your document that was unfiltered or had its own filter, perhaps for comparison purposes, then you can break this link and display an unfiltered report by deleting the <Previous Criteria> node from the report filter. For example you could do this when comparing two charts side by side; one filtered by the segment and the other unfiltered, the general population.

Reinstating the Link

If a user deletes the <Previous Criteria> source from their report and wants to reinstate it, then this can be done by dragging the User Selection tool into the report filter area. They can then select <Previous Criteria> from the Selection Source drop-down.

Dragging the tool into a document that already contains reports will display all existing selection sources.
